‘Jihadists Talked Of Building An Ultimate Mowing Machine’

A jihadist gang accused of plotting suicide bombings more devastating than the 7/7 attacks on London talked of building an ‘Ultimate Mowing Machine’ to kill and maim.

Irfan Naseer, 31, Irfan Khalid, 27, and Ashik Ali, 27, from Birmingham, have pleaded not guilty to engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorist acts.

But the prosecution claims that in covert recordings made by police after the men returned from Pakistan they are heard talking about putting sharp blades on the front of a truck and “running” into people, the court heard.

Recorded speaking on September 10, they discussed an idea for a weapon that had been published in an outlawed extremist online magazine called Inspire under the headline “The Ultimate Mowing Machine”.

It was an article the prosecution said the defendants were clearly aware of. Complete story below.

Court Paves Way For UK-Based Cleric’s Extradition To U.S.

The European Court of Human Rights gave final approval on Monday for the extradition of one of Britain’s most radical Islamist clerics and four others to the United States, where they face terrorism charges.

The decision caps a long legal battle and means Abu Hamza al-Masri could be extradited within weeks. Britain’s Home Office, or interior ministry, said it would hand over the suspects “as quickly as possible”.

The Egyptian-born al-Masri, 54, filed an appeal, along with the four other suspects, after the court in Strasbourg authorized Britain to transfer him to the United States on charges he supported al Qaeda and aided a fatal kidnapping in Yemen. Al-Masri, who could face a sentence of more than 100 years in an ultra-secure “Supermax” prison, had argued such treatment would contravene Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits inhumane and degrading treatment.

“Today the Grand Chamber decided to reject the request. This means that the Chamber judgment of April 10, 2012, is now final,” the court said in a statement. The decision also concerned appeals lodged by four other defendants, Babar Ahmad, Syed Tahla Ahsan, Adel Abdul Bary and Khaled Al-Fawwaz, all of whom have been detained in Britain pending extradition to the United States. A Home Office spokesman said: “We will work to ensure that the individuals are handed over to the U.S. authorities as quickly as possible.”

The family of Ahmad called on the government to halt the extradition process, saying British prosecutors were in possession of the material that forms the basis of the U.S. indictment and should pursue the case in Britain. Al-Masri is one of the most radical Islamists in Britain, a country he has attacked for its support of U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A suicide car bomber struck a Catholic church conducting Mass in northern Nigeria’s troubled Bauchi city Sunday, leaving at least three people dead, including a woman and a child, and 48 others injured in a region plagued by violence unleashed by a Islamist militant group.

The bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into a queue of church members who were being screened to go in for Sunday Mass, Red Cross official Adamu Abubakar said. The explosion killed the bomber, a woman and a child. About forty eight others were seriously injured in the blast, Abubaker said.

Eyewitnesses said the police cordoned off the premises of St John’s Catholic Church as soon as the explosion occurred.

The church is the biggest in the city and shares fence with a soccer stadium in Wunti city-centre district.

Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Bauchi’s Commissioner of Police, T Stevens, said the bomber was prevented from entering the church at the gate by security men just as he decided to detonate the bomb.
Nobody has claimed responsibility for the bombing but Bauchi is among the cities targeted by Islamist militant group Boko Haram which has vowed to install the tough ‘Sharia’ law in the country.

Top Muslim Cleric Shot Dead In Russian Province Of Tatarstan; Another Wounded In Car Bomb

A top Muslim cleric in Russia’s Tatarstan province was shot dead Thursday and another was wounded by a car bomb, attacks that the province’s leader and local religious authorities said were probably related to the priests’ criticism of radical Islamists.

Valiulla Yakupov, the deputy to the Muslim province’s chief mufti, was gunned down Thursday as he left his house in Tatarstan’s regional capital of Kazan, Russia’s Investigative Committee said. Minutes later, chief mufti Ildus Faizov was wounded in the leg after an explosive device ripped through his car in central Kazan, it said.

Both clerics were known as critics of radical Islamist groups that advocate a strict and puritan version of Islam known as Salafism. Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Russian media his agency was looking into the clerics’ stances as a possible reason for the attacks. By Thursday evening, investigators said they were viewing the attacks as terrorism.

Tunisia: Salafi Muslims Attack Cities, 86 Arrested

The rioting started over the night in Tunis and then spread to many other cities in the country (such as Sousse and Jendouba), which saw extremely violent episodes fostered by hundreds of Salafis.

In some situations the police were forced to shoot into the air in the attempt to quell the rioting, such as in the Ettahir municipality, where in this way they managed to prevent a group of policemen from being attacked by hundreds of Salafis armed with clubs and stones.

The extremists’ protest began in the northern outskirts of the capital and especially in Marsa, where the gallery of art is located which – through its exhibition of works held to be immoral by Salafis – sparked their reaction. From Marsa the rioting spread to the southern suburbs to the edges of Carthage, where the presidential palace is located, under military guard the entire night.

Salafis have gone on the rampage in many Tunisian cities, with the destruction of property and the setting on fire of police stations, party and union headquarters and even a lorry transporting alcoholic beverages.

In Sousse this morning, the Salafis used incendiary bombs to attack the main building of the Fine Arts Institute, and it was by pure chance that the staff already at work managed to escape the flames. In Jendouba a number of headquarters of non-religious parties were set aflame, as was the headquarters of a union, the Regional Labour Union. The police station was laid to waste, as were a number of shops selling electronic devices. According to the initial statements from the Interior Ministry reported by Reuters, 86 people have been arrested so far.

The police kept the men under surveillance for some time before arresting them.

Three of the men – all members of an al-Qaeda inspired terror group – received indeterminate sentences for public protection at London’s Woolwich Crown Court.The court heard they had planned to raise funds for a terrorist camp in Pakistan and recruit Britons to attend.

A police investigation has cleared Islamic organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir of any wrongdoing in connection with a public debate in January that focused on “the duty of armed resistance for Muslims in Afghanistan and surrounding nations”.

The meeting was roundly criticised, partly because Hizb ut-Tahrir had illustrated the invitation to their meeting with pictures of Scandinavian soldiers returning home from the war in coffins.

The police opened an investigation because the invitation to the meeting could be read as a call to armed rebellion, reports Berlingske newspaper.

“The invitation’s statement that passivity is unacceptable for a Muslim can probably be read in a variety of ways,” said police lawyer Dorit Borgaard. “But we believe there is insufficient evidence to prove that Hizb ut-Tahrir has done anything criminal if we compare the invitation with their follow-up press release and what their representative said at the meeting.”

The comments were made as part of a public debate about Denmark’s participation in the war in Afghanistan. In such a situation the freedom of speech should carry some weight, said Borgaard.

According to the invitation the debate would “also focus on the duty of armed resistance for Muslims in Afghanistan and surrounding nations. We consider this resistance completely legitimate.”

In response to the criticism to the invitation, Hizb ut-Tahrir issued a press release which clarified the original statement.

“The lawful resistance to the occupation does not include civil war or the killing of innocent Western citizens,” the press release read. “The absurd claim that our message contains a hidden call to armed rebellion is a desperate attempt by politicians to contort the real message.”
